In order to increase the enrolment of girl students in higher education and discourage child marriage, as well as reduce dropout rates for students, the state cabinet approved the Assam Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Scheme under which financial assistance will be provided to girl students for pursuing higher education.
Girl students enrolled in higher secondary, degree first year, and PG first year of government and venture schools, colleges, and universities, irrespective of their economic status, will be eligible for this scheme.
Assam Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Scheme 2024
Students enrolled in Class XI will get an incentive of Rs 1,000 per month over a period of 10 months every year. For students enrolled in degree first year, the incentive will be Rs 1,250 per month over a period of 10 months and for students enrolled in post graduation first year, the assistance will be of Rs 2,500 per month.
From the 2nd year onwards, no application needs to be submitted. A certificate from the head of the institution, certifying her continuity in the institution, will be sufficient for availing benefits, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told a press conference here.
The preparation of the Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Scheme through form distribution will start in July for colleges and in September for universities. The first disbursement is expected in October and the government plans to spend around Rs 300 crore this year. The total budgetary implication of the scheme is around Rs 1,500 crore for 5 years, after which the government will review it.
Sarma said beneficiaries must maintain discipline and adhere to all rules and regulations set forth by the institute, such as maintaining regular attendance and following relevant instructions from teachers and staff.
Daughters of MPs/MLAs and ministers, married girl students (except PG and BEd students), girl students who received scooters under the Pragyan Bharati Scheme and students enrolled in private institutions will not be eligible under the scheme.
Over 2 lakh girl students are estimated to benefit from this scheme, which aims to increase the overall gross enrolment ratio beyond matriculation and help eliminate the social evil of child marriage, the Chief Minister said.
